2014 Team Iowa Ice Coach

Trudy Vande Berg

Trudy is the current Assistant Coach at Cornell University in New York.  Vande Berg worked at Iowa State University from 2009-12 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Cyclones after spending the previous four years in the same capacity at Duke. Her efforts at ISU helped lay the foundation for the Cyclones trip to the NCAA Elite Eight a year ago, as well as ISU’s procurement of the fifth-ranked recruiting class in the country this season.

Trudy is in her third year as Team Iowa Ice's Head Coach and led the team to a PVL National Championship in 2013.

Tina Carter

Tina Carter begins her sixth season as head coach of the Viking volleyball program, amassing a record of 142-64 including a school record 39-10 in 2011. In the five years under Carter’s direction, the Vikings have vaulted to the top of the Midwest Collegiate Conference and become one of the top volleyball programs in the NAIA.

Grand View won the MCC regular season title in both 2011 and 2012, the MCC Tournament title in 2011, and made national tournament appearances in both 2011 and 2012. Carter was voted the MCC Coach of the Year in both 2009 and 2011 and the AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2011.

Tina is in her third year as Team Iowa Ice's Assistant Coach.

  • Career finish 12th highest in MVC history for career kills and 5th highest in MVC history in career attempts
  • Led team to Drake’s first winning season since 1996 during junior season and the best start in Drake program history at 14-0 senior year
  • Top MVC freshman in kills per game (4.45) and points per game (5.01)

 Carly Jenson-Mulcahy
  • from Omaha, Nebraska and attended Millard North HS.  Her high school team advanced to the state tournament her final three years.  Played in the Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Match, was first team all-state and first team all-metro

Caitlin Mahoney 
  • From Omaha, Nebraska and attended Marian HS
  • While in high school, captured the Class A record for aces in a match, season, and career.
  • Played club volleyball for Nebraska Elite.
  • Played at Iowa State University.  While there, the team made it to the Elite Eight and beat Nebraska for the first time in school history, and her senior year received an overall 4th ranking in the NCAA tournament. 
  • College awards: Academic All-Big 12 first team in 2011, and Academic All-Big 12 second team in 2010.

 Bre Payton
  • From Waterloo, IA and attended Waterloo Columbus HS
  • While in high school, was a four tim first team all-conference selection, three time first team all-metro and all-district, and a two time first team all-state selection. Was on the Elite All-State team and the State All-Tournament team in 2006.  
  • 4-year starter for the University of Northern Iowa
  • College awards: MVC Player of the Year, AVCA All-America second team, AVCA All-Central REgion first team, MVC All-Tournament team.
  • At the setting position she became only the 2 player in conference and UNI history to be crowned the Player of The Year award doing so 3 Times (2009, 2010, 2011)
  • Along with that Payton was the only active division I Player in 2011 to have over 700 kills, 1000 digs, and 4000 assist

 Kelsey Petersen 
  • From Kearney, Nebraska and attended Kearney HS.  
  • While in high school, was the No. 60 high school senior recruit, was first-team all state and named one of the Top 2008 Female Athletes by the LIncoln Journal Star and Kearney Hub.  also had a stellar prep track career, capturing back-to-back state titles in the high jump.
  • Played club volleyblal for NVA, Nebraska Gold, and Lincold Juniors.

 Megan Schipper
  • From Aplington, IA and attended Aplington-Parkersburg HS.
  • Played at the University of Iowa from 2006-2010.  Graduated with a BA in Health Promotion.
  • Graduate assistant Coach at University of Northern Iowa from 2010-2012, and will graduate with a Masters in Kinesiology in 2012.
  • Currently resides in Cedar Falls, IA

 Devon Jensen (#9)
  • Played at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA
  • MCC Player of the Year The Midwest Collegiate Conference  For the third straight season Grand View junior outside hitterDevon Jensen (Underwood, Iowa) was named MCC Player of the Year.
  • Jensen once again repeated as the MCC leader in kills with 713 kills (4.60 kills/game).
  • She leads the NAIA in total kills and ranks second nationally in kills per game.
  • She also was second on her team and with 568 digs and eighth in the MCC averaging 3.40 digs per game and added 92 blocks.
  • Jensen led the Vikings to the MCC regular season and tournament championships and a trip to the NAIA Volleyball National Championships.

 Laurel Abrahamson (#18)
  • Played at University of San Diego
  • attended the University of San Diego on a full-ride scholarship as a middle hitter from 2004-2008.
  • Laurel helped the team win three West Coast Conference championships along with four NCAA tournament appearances, including a visit to Louisville for the sweet 16.
  • She was named MVP and Athlete of the Year in 2007
  • First Team All Conference and All WCC in 2006 & 2007.
  • Laurel led the team with the highest hitting percentage and total blocks in 2006 & 2007. At USD Laurel received her BA in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. After college, she continued to play professionally in Finland, Spain and Portugal.

 Justine Landi (#2)
  • Played at Louisville
  • First Team All-BIG EAST and All-BIG EAST Tournament as well as AVCA
  • First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention AVCA All-American Honors.
  • two-time BIG EAST Honor Roll selection and earned All-Adidas Indiana Classic honors.
  • She was in double digit kills in 22 of 30 matches with a season high of 22 against DePaul.
  • She had 20 against Wake Forest and Indiana. As a setter in the 6-2, she had a season-high 33 assists against Purdue. She had 27 aces

 Justine Young (#17) 
  • Played at Kennesaw State
  • Ranked as top junior college middle blocker at Division II level.
  • 2010: At Texas Tech, named the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the conference coaches
  • Fourth overall in total blocks with 49.
  • season-high .429 hitting percentage in the match, the second-highest percentage for a Tech player in a single match this season

Jessy Jones - On leave to train with the USA National Team

  • Jones, an honorable mention all-Big Ten pick as a junior, contributed 1.33 blocks per game for Minnesota as the Gophers reached the national quarterfinal round in 2006. She added a .321 attack percentage on 2.99 kills per game.
